What Is Wash and Fold? How It Works, What It Costs and Is It Worth It

There’s actually a lot more to doing your laundry than just pressing the start button on the washing machine. A wash and fold service is a little different as it washes, dries and folds appropriate everyday clothing so you get clean laundry without having to do each step yourself.

That convenience can be tempting when you have limited space to dry your clothes, a busy schedule or a laundry basket that never seems to empty. But what does the price cover? When will your clothes be back, and is it worth paying for? This guide explains what wash and fold is, what it costs in the UK and US and what to expect when you book with Laundryheap.

What does a Wash and Fold Service Include?

A wash and fold service includes washing, drying and folding suitable laundry in a machine. It is also known as fluff and fold, particularly in the US.

At Laundryheap, our partner facilities use detergent, tumble-dry the laundry and return it neatly folded in a bag. Ironing is not included, so folded clothes may still have creases. It can remove a recurring task from your list. In a 2026 survey, 37% of US households reported washing four to six loads each week.

How does Wash and Fold Work?

Laundryheap allows you to schedule pick-up and delivery at your convenience. Pick, wash and fold from the website or app. Then choose from available collection and return slots. Check the care label on each garment to make sure the washing and drying conditions are allowed. Empty your pockets before collection. If you are booking other services like dry cleaning, please pack those items in separate bags.

Your driver tags each bag for the service you selected and delivers it to a local partner location. Your laundry will be washed, dried and folded as per your selected service and agreed instructions. Then your clean laundry is delivered back to you ready to put away.

You can follow collection updates through the app or tracking link.

What Can You Put in a Wash and Fold Bag?

Include everyday items with tags showing how they should be machine-washed and tumble-dried. Typical examples are appropriate T-shirts, pants, socks, towels and bedsheets. Keep dry-clean-only garments, hand-wash-only pieces and items that must dry flat out of the standard bag. Wool, cashmere and delicate fabrics need particular attention.

Laundryheap also excludes duvets, bulky items, bath mats, shoes and pet bedding from standard wash and fold. Choose our duvet and bulky-item service where available.

How Much does Wash and Fold Cost?

Wash and fold prices depend on location, weight and whether you choose mixed or separate washing. Laundryheap’s published UK and US price lists currently show:

ServiceUK listed priceUS listed price
Mixed wash, all colours together£19.50 for the first 6 kilos$39.75 for the first 15 lb
Separate light and dark washes£39.00 for the first 12 kilos$79.50 for the first 30 lb
Additional weight£3.75 per extra kilo$2.65 per extra lb

Check your address for current rates, minimum order value, service fees and any applicable tax. These are Laundryheap prices, not market averages.

The base allowance is a minimum cleaning charge, not a promise to charge only for the weight you send. A smaller mixed-wash load still attracts the base price. Separate washing has a larger base allowance because lights and darks are processed separately. See the live UK wash and fold prices and US wash and fold prices. Laundryheap also applies an area-specific minimum order value and service fee, so compare the complete bill.

When Will your Clothes be Returned?

Laundryheap’s published turnaround for standard laundry is 24 hours in most areas and up to 48 hours in others. Your available bookings display the time according to your address. If the collection is done today, it does not automatically mean it will return tonight. Check the delivery slot before booking, especially before travel or when you need something urgently. Keep enough clean essentials aside until your order returns.

Is Wash and Fold Worth It?

Wash and fold would be worth it when the extra cost buys back time or solves a practical problem. It is particularly useful when you don’t have access to a reliable washing machine, have limited drying space, or are during a demanding week. Home washing may cost you less if you already have suitable equipment. Don’t forget to include detergent, energy, water, machine wear and any launderette travel when you are comparing costs.

To decide whether wash and fold is worth it, think about what you would pay to get that time back. For example, if a delivery service costs £30 and washing the same load at home costs £5, you are paying £25 extra for the convenience.

If that saves you 90 minutes of sorting, carrying, transferring and folding, it works out at around £16.67 for each hour you get back. These figures are just an example, but comparing your own costs and time can help you decide whether the extra expense feels worthwhile. You do not have to use the service every week, either. Getting help with a pile of post-holiday washing or during a particularly busy week can be enough to make life easier.

Simplify Your Laundry Routine With Wash and Fold

Wash and fold handles the washing, drying and folding, so you can keep up with everyday laundry. Just make sure each item is suitable for the service’s washing and drying conditions, and choose a service that includes ironing if you need a pressed finish.

Before booking, check the full price, decide whether you need separate light and dark washes, and confirm your return slot. Whether you use it regularly or occasionally, its value depends on how well it fits your budget and the time it saves you. Let Laundryheap take one more chore off your hands. Arrange a collection near you and have your everyday laundry collected, cleaned and returned neatly folded.
