5 Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Pillow

Just like your mattress, your pillows have a ‘shelf life’ and must be replaced every couple of years. Your pillow is one of the factors that contribute to a good or bad nights sleep, so make sure to get new pillows when the time is right.

5 Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Pillow

  • Visible lumps and bumps from foam

Pillows should be smooth, soft and comfy. If the material inside your pillow starts to wear out, it will feel and be visibly bumpy. This is a clear indication that you need a new one as it can no longer give you the support and comfort you need.

  • You get aches and pains

Due to the bumps in the pillow, you’ll start to wake up with body aches especially around the neck and shoulder area. You’ll also notice that you’re not sleeping as well as you should be and wake up with headaches that tend to go away during the day.

  • It’s just not comfy anymore

If your pillow is no longer comfy, you’ll often keep tossing and turning, trying to find the right sleeping position, and adjusting your pillow. If you can’t get a good sleep because of that, then change your pillow.

  • It’s starting to smell

You won’t notice straight away that your pillow smells because it becomes gradual as dirt and bacteria build-up. Once you notice that your pillow has a strange smell and still smells even after washing it, that already is a sure enough indication that your pillow needs to be replaced.

  • You wake up sneezing!

Pillows are a great breeding environment for dirt, sweat.. and dust mites! If you find yourself randomly sneezing when you’ve just woken up, this is because of the bacteria living in your pillow.

How Often You Should Replace Your Pillow

Synthetic Pillows: 1-2 years

Memory Foam: 2-3 years or when the foam becomes hard

Down and Feather Pillows: 5-10 years

Maintaining Your Pillow

As part of maintaining your pillow to make sure it reaches maximum ‘shelf life’, you should have them washed every few months. This can be done at home using your washing machine and or by a professional.

We at Laundryheap know that it can be difficult to wash pillows at home, especially when they won’t fit into your washing machine. That’s why we offer cleaning services for your pillows as well as other bulky bedding items.
