Now, I know that typically, most of us sort laundry according to colour type before putting it straight into the wash. This is THE correct way to sorting out laundry anyway. There are, however, other ways to manage the loads you’re washing.

3 Ways To Sort Laundry

Only By Colour

Once again, the most obvious choice of sorting is by colour. Make separate piles for white clothes, dark colours and coloured clothes. The dark pile should consist of colours like: black, grey, navy, red, purple, basically anything that is dark toned. The coloured pile should consist of lighter toned colours such as pastel or neon colours.

By Fabric Type

So there is a 100% chance you own garments of different fabric types. This is where you pay close attention to the type of fabric you’re dealing with after you’ve sorted it by colour. 

• Delicate fabric: Keep delicate fabrics such as lingerie, pantyhose, machine washable silk, lace or chiffon, together in one pile for a separate wash to avoid fabric damage. 
• Bedding and towels: It’s best to wash household items separate from your normal loads when putting it in the wash. So do wash bedding together, but since towels can be washed with anything cotton, it is okay to wash your sheets and towels together.
• Denim: If you have A LOT of denim clothes to be cleaned, you can put this in a separate pile to be washed. Otherwise, add it to the dark colour load.

By Stain

It’s likely that your clothes are always lightly soiled, or invisibly stained because of perspiration. So it’s okay to pre-treat and sort laundry as normal before putting it into the wash.

If you have babies or toddlers however, that’s a completely different story and it means you probably deal with stains 90% of the time. 

Consider separating heavily soiled clothes from your pile to maximise cleaning effectiveness. The reason being is that these stains may require extra pre-treating time or certain cycles for the stains to be uplifted and removed.

Final thoughts…

One of the best ways that contribute to cleaner results when doing laundry is how you sort your laundry out in the first place. If you don’t have time to be sorting laundry, the best thing you can do, as I always say, is to buy multiple hampers and sort accordingly on the go. Alternatively, you can give your clothes to a laundry service for proper cleansing.
