How to Wash a Mattress Protector (and How Often)

Keep your mattress protector clean without damaging waterproofing.

If you want to know how to wash a mattress protector, begin by looking at its care label. For machine-washable protection, use a mild detergent and the recommended cycle and temperature. Do not bleach or use fabric softeners on waterproof versions. Only air dry or tumble dry if the label says so. Your sheets get the lion’s share of attention when laundry day rolls around, but the layer underneath also gathers sweat, body oils and the occasional spill. By keeping it clean you will extend the life of your bedding and care for its fabric, filling and any waterproof backing.

Small change. Big difference.

Here’s how to choose the right settings, deal with stains and dry your protector before it goes back on the bed.

Check Before Washing a Mattress Protector?

Before you select a programme, check the care label. The top may be cotton or bamboo, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a waterproof backing under it, and the name of the fabric doesn’t tell you how to wash it. When provided, follow hand-wash or spot-clean-only instructions.

A machine’s delicate programme does not replace hand-washing. Temperature limits vary. For example, TEMPUR allows washing up to 60°C (140°F) for its Home BY TEMPUR Thermoregulating Mattress Protector, which has polyurethane backing. That permission applies to that product, rather than every waterproof protector.

Use our Label, Load, Layer checklist:

  • Label: Confirm washing, drying and detergent instructions. Use our laundry symbol guide if needed.
  • Load: Check your washing machine’s instructions for bulky and waterproof items.
  • Layer: Identify waterproof backing, padding or specialist filling before treating stains.

A protector shields the mattress. A mattress pad usually adds cushioning, although some pads also provide waterproof protection. A thick foam topper needs its own care instructions; do not assume it is washable.

How to Wash a Mattress Protector, Step by Step

For a protector labelled machine-washable, follow these steps.

  1. Strip the bed and inspect the protector by removing the sheets and checking seams, elastic and the underside. Set aside anything with peeling backing or obvious damage before washing.
  2. Pre-treat stains by lifting away solids and blot liquid with a clean cloth. Use a little suitable mild detergent on the fabric surface, following both product labels. Avoid vigorous scrubbing.
  3. Load the protector loosely, as it needs room to move and rinse. Follow its instructions about washing separately or with similar linens. Keep it away from items with exposed hooks or fastenings.
  4. Measure the detergent and use a mild product without built-in fabric softener. Follow dosing instructions for the load, water hardness and machine type.
  5. Choose the permitted settings: a gentle cycle with cool water suits many washable protectors, but use the programme and temperature specified for yours.
  6. If detergent remains on the cover, use an extra rinse where permitted. Inspect marks before drying and repeat suitable treatment if necessary.

For fresh blood, start with cold water. Treat urine promptly, using a compatible enzyme detergent only when the protector’s instructions allow it.

How Do You Wash a Waterproof Mattress Protector?

Keep the waterproof backing on when washing and drying. Many waterproof protectors have a thin polyurethane layer just under the surface of the fabric, and you can damage it by using the wrong heat or cleaning products.

Use this quick reference alongside the product label:

Part of the routineWhat to doWhat to avoid
WashingUse the permitted cycle and temperatureAssuming every protector tolerates the same wash
DetergentChoose a compatible mild productBleach and fabric softener
Stain treatmentBlot the fabric surface gentlyScrubbing the waterproof backing
DryingFollow the stated method and heat limitHigh heat or ironing

Do not choose dry cleaning simply because an item is waterproof. Some manufacturers expressly prohibit it because the process can damage the membrane.

If the label is missing, find instructions for the exact model or contact the manufacturer before washing. A similar-looking product may have different care requirements.

How Do You Dry a Mattress Protector?

Wash separately from the drying instructions. Follow the drying instructions. Permission to machine wash does not automatically grant permission to tumble dry. If you want to air dry it, lay the protector on a clean rack or line that will provide enough support to keep it from being stretched. Leave the layers apart so air can circulate and move it around to expose damp folds. Follow any instructions to lay flat to air dry. Use indoors in a well-ventilated room. A fan can push air through the fabric. Do not put a waterproof protector on a hot radiator.

If tumble drying is permitted, use the specified setting, commonly low heat. Check periodically and rearrange bunched fabric rather than turning up the temperature. Before remaking the bed, check the corners, seams, elasticated skirt and any padding. They must be completely dry, even when the main surface feels ready. Drying time depends on the material, thickness, airflow and conditions, so allow time beyond the wash itself.

How Often Should You Wash a Mattress Protector?

Every one to two months is a useful starting point for a washable protector on a regularly used bed, unless its manufacturer recommends otherwise. Inspect it whenever you change the sheets. Wash sooner if you notice stains, odours, heavy sweating or pet-related soiling, and promptly after spills, bed-wetting or illness affecting the bedding.

For an occasionally used guest bed, assess how much the protector has actually been used and check it before the next guest arrives. You do not need to add every protector to every sheet wash automatically. If you are refreshing several bedding layers, our guide to washing a duvet explains its separate care requirements.

Which Mistakes Should You Avoid?

Avoid choosing a hotter wash out of habit, and stay within the temperature limit on the care label. Bleach and fabric softener can affect waterproof protection or absorbency, while an overfilled drum leaves too little room for proper washing and rinsing. Keep irons away from waterproof backing, and make sure every part of the protector is completely dry before putting it back on the bed.

If liquid has reached the mattress itself, check its manufacturer’s instructions and follow our guide to cleaning a mattress.

Keep these Mattress Protector Care Essentials in Mind

Follow the washing and drying instructions on your mattress protector’s care label, and give it enough room in the machine to move and rinse properly. Avoid bleach and fabric softener on waterproof protectors to help preserve the protective layer. Wash it regularly and promptly after spills or soiling, and make sure it is completely dry before putting it back on the bed.

Knowing how to wash a mattress protector comes down to matching the method to its construction and letting it dry thoroughly. Keep the label handy, check it regularly and deal with spills promptly.
