Laundry vs Dry Cleaning

Laundry and dry cleaning both work to do the same thing but in different methods. Depending on the type of material your clothing is made out of, it may need a more careful cleaning approach. If you’re unsure about how dry cleaning works, you can check out our blog on the dry cleaning process.

Both methods have advantages and disadvantages, but choosing the right one will ensure longevity for your clothes.

Here are the main differences between laundry and dry cleaning:

 Laundry

  • Natural cleaning process makes clothes fresh
  • No harmful chemicals used
  • Free from chemical odour
  • Safe for people with sensitive skin
  • A cheaper method

Dry cleaning

  • Uses a chemical solvent to clean clothes
  • Effectively removes tough grease and oil stains
  • Safe from shrinkage, fabric distortion & colour bleeding
  • Protects material and ensures longevity
  • Best for some delicate fabrics

Laundry vs Dry Cleaning

Laundry can effectively clean your clothes thoroughly but may ruin specific clothing in terms of altering the structure, colour fading, and wear and tear. Dry cleaning, on the other hand, use hazardous chemicals that can not only be irritable to the skin and harmful to the environment but can stain or leave a noxious odour on your clothes.

Despite these minor disadvantages, they are less likely to occur if procedures are followed accordingly with the right fabric type. For example, some clothes are not made to be wet-washed, but dry- cleaned instead.

If you’re unsure of which method is to use, your best bet is to check the care label on your clothes as it will indicate the best cleaning method for your clothing items as well as other care instructions.
