I live in an apartment without a washer. After trying to wash clothes by hand and planning my weekends around the launderette, I found that Laundryheap<\/a> worked best for my routine. But when I first moved in, laundry barely registered as a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The apartment had decent light, a manageable commute and enough room for the things I cared about. There was no washing machine, but I told myself I would figure that out. Then I reached for a clean towel and realised that \u201cfiguring it out\u201d needed to become an actual plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, I tried washing clothes by hand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My first solution involved the bathroom sink, some detergent and more optimism than the situation deserved. I started with a few small items, checking the care labels before washing them. It felt manageable. I could surely manage this if I washed a little at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trouble was everything that came afterwards. I still had to rinse the clothes thoroughly, deal with the excess water and find somewhere to hang them. My drying rack occupied a surprising amount of the apartment. On days when things dried slowly, yesterday\u2019s washing was still there when I needed space for the next batch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small items were one thing, but towels and bedding were another. I began putting off the bulky stuff, which meant my laundry routine worked only if I ignored a fairly important part of my laundry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Handwashing stayed useful for the occasional suitable item. It was never going to be my solution for the whole basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launderette worked, but my weekends revolved around it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Next, I found a local launderette. The new facility was a genuine improvement. I could finally manage a proper load, including the towels I had been avoiding. Having access to washing machines and dryers made the job much more manageable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I had underestimated everything surrounding the wash. There was sorting and packing the clothes, carrying the bag over, finding an available machine and organising my time around the wash and drying cycles. Then I had to carry everything home and put it away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried taking a book. Occasionally, I used the waiting time to answer messages. It was fine when I had a quiet weekend. It became frustrating when I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a friend suggested breakfast or I needed to catch up on errands, I had to work out where laundry would fit. Postponing it only made the next bag heavier. The launderette solved the missing-machine problem. I still wanted a routine that required less planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I considered a portable washing machine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After another trip home with a full laundry bag, I started looking at portable washing machines. The idea appealed to me. I could wash at home without finding space for a full-sized appliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
