{"id":1531,"date":"2018-11-02T11:00:01","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T11:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.laundryheap.com/blog\/?p=1531"},"modified":"2025-10-14T08:12:05","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T07:12:05","slug":"sustainable-laundry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.laundryheap.com/blog\/sustainable-laundry\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainable Laundry Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Laundry is a time and an energy consuming activity that contributes to the CO2 emissions of the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Here is what doing laundry does to the environment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Chemicals from liquids (detergents\/softeners)\u00a0 used in the laundry are released into the environment as wastewater; greatly affecting the ecosystems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Phosphates in detergent can contaminate fresh water and cause harm to humans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#808080;\"><a style=\"color:#808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2016\/sep\/27\/washing-clothes-releases-water-polluting-fibres-study-finds\">700,000 microplastic fibres<\/a> are released into the ocean, every time you wash; causing harm to marine life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#808080;\">One normal cycle on the washing machine typically uses up to 30 gallons of water, which then converts into wastewater.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#808080;\"><span style=\"color:#808080;\">High temperature washes can cause an increase of <a style=\"color:#808080;\" href=\"http:\/\/css.umich.edu\/factsheets\/carbon-footprint-factsheet\">CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions by 1.2-14.9 pounds per laundry load<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Here are some of the things you can do, to have a more sustainable laundry operation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Wash only when you need to:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Reduce the number of loads you do per week and wash only when you absolutely need to. This can be done by wearing your outerwear clothes more often than once. By doing this, you&#8217;ll save a whole lot of energy, water and money!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Wash on colder cycles: <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Did you know that about 90% of the energy used in the washing machine is used to heat up water for hot washes? Washing on a colder cycle completely reduces the energy needed to heat up the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Use green laundry detergent: <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Conventional detergents may contain harmful ingredients (phosphates) that aren&#8217;t good for your skin and can affect the aquatic ecosystems and marine life in a negative way. Look for detergents that are biodegradable, are phosphate-free, and are plant based products. These indicate that they&#8217;re environmentally friendly as well as kind to the skin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Also, why not go for concentrated detergent? They have reduced packaging and reduce carbon footprint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#808080;\">You can also make your own detergent! What better way for eco-friendly laundry than with homemade detergent?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Wash by hand:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><span style=\"color:#808080;\">The ancient way of washing clothes means less consumption of water and energy! Yes, it may be time consuming but it is a good work out.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\">Natural air dry:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><span style=\"color:#808080;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color:#808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/green-living-blog\/2010\/nov\/25\/carbon-footprint-load-laundry\">Tumble drying contributes to\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#808080;\"><a style=\"color:#808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/green-living-blog\/2010\/nov\/25\/carbon-footprint-load-laundry\">75% of the carbon footprint<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><span style=\"color:#808080;\">Drying naturally uses no energy whatsoever, so if it&#8217;s a lovely sunny day, make the most of it and dry your clothes outside, if not, then dry them in your home. Only use the dryer when you need to wear your clothes right away.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#00ccff;\"><strong>Using <a href=\"http:\/\/laundryheap.co.uk\">Laundry services<\/a><\/strong>: <span style=\"color:#808080;\">Sounds a little unusual but commercial washers and dryers tend to be more efficient than domestic versions because they&#8217;re bigger and can take more kg.
