The Right Way To Wash Towels

Who doesn’t love the luxury of soft towels?! I know I do! Unfortunately, towels start to feel rough against the skin and can possibly start to smell like mildew overtime because of not washing them the right way.

Here are some factors to consider when washing your towels:

How Often To Wash Towels

Every time you use your towel, it collects dead skin cells that remain after you’ve had a wash and over time it begins to build up. This then creates a great environment for bacteria to grow and thrive because of the towels moist and damp condition.

Therefore, it is advised to wash your towels after 3-4 days or uses!

The Right Way To Wash Towels

Towels need more than just a normal laundry cycle, there a certain things that you should and shouldn’t do when cleaning your towels.

  • Don’t use too much detergent: Using too much laundry detergent can cause towels to stiffen because of excess residue. Instead, use less detergent than you usually would on normal loads.
  • Avoid fabric softener: Although this stuff is suppose to make your fabrics soft, it will only strip the water absorbency qualities on your towels! Add vinegar to your load as an alternative to fabric softener every few weeks.
  • Don’t wash towels with normal clothes: Towels may not get properly cleaned when mixed in with other clothes and they also produce a lot of lint so it can get caught onto your clothes. It’s best to wash towels with other towels or similar fabrics.
  • Dry accordingly: Drying towels with too much heat will only ruin towels fibres and not drying enough will cause mildew. Instead either completely air dry your towels or follow the tumble dry instructions exactly as it says on the care label.
  • Wash towels in warm temperatures: To be able to kill bacteria and clean towels properly, it is best to wash your towels at the highest temperature stated in the care label.

If you have too many towels to wash or just don’t have the time to wash your towels the right way, you can always book a collection with laundryheap.
