The Right Way To Wash Gym Clothes

To wash gym clothes might seem just like a regular laundry routine, but it really isn’t. There are specific steps that you must avoid doing and specific steps you should take when washing your gym clothes properly.

Wash Inside Out

The sweat and bacteria that gym clothes collect are on the inside of the garment. Washing inside out will help greatly in removing the bacteria, as detergent comes into better contact. Washing clothes inside out also helps to protect it’s sweat absorption properties and it’s colour.

Wash With Similar Clothing

It’s best to wash gym clothes with similar material. Main reason being is so that the clothes don’t get damaged or worn out easily. If you were to wash with, for example, denim or clothing with buttons and zips, they will only end up rubbing against the soft material and cause it to wear out quickly. You sort of have to treat gym clothes as delicates.

Use Less Detergent

When it comes to washing gym clothes, using less detergent does more at keeping it clean. Gym clothes can get real stinky and so people have a tendency to add more detergent than usual to get rid of the odour. BUT, this only makes it worse as detergent residue creates build up on fabric fibres, causing a mildew smell. So, add a small amount of detergent to your clothes. Pre-treat them with vinegar if you must.

Avoid Fabric Softener

Fabric softener is great for making clothes soft but does NOT go well with clothing fabrics that have specific purposes. Gym clothes are designed to absorb our sweat and moisture that we produce. Adding fabric softener to it only strips it of it’s absorption properties and creates a layer over the fabric. This also makes it difficult for the detergent to fully penetrate through fabric fibres.

Air Dry

As much as possible, try to avoid the tumble dryer and opt for the natural air drying method instead. Gym clothes contain fabric fibres that are sensitive to shrinkage and damage when exposed to too much heat as well as agitation. Unless your gym clothes laundry care label says otherwise, choose to air dry your gym clothes to make them last longer.

Make sure to always follow the care label when washing your gym clothes, for the right washing temperature and other important laundry instructions. You can also leave your gym clothes to be washed by professionals, by booking a laundry service with laundryheap.
