How To Get Rid Of Smoke Smells From Clothes

Smoke smells, whether they’re from cigarettes, cigars or bbq’s tend to stick on to fabrics. Sometimes it’s difficult to remove smoke smells from clothes, even after doing the laundry. So, how do you remove the smoke smell from clothes?

How To Get Rid Of Smoke Smells From Clothes

  • Air it out 
  • Steam
  • Odour eliminator spray
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar

Air It Out 

This solution is perfect for clothes that cannot be washed or exposed to liquid, but  can work for any type of clothing. Sometimes all it takes to get rid of the smoke smell is a bit of fresh air. Hang your clothes outside for a few hours or in well ventilated area indoors if you can’t hang it outside. 

Steam

Steaming or pressing your clothes is a great way to remove odour as the heat kills the odour causing bacteria. It’s also perfect for clothes that you can’t wash. Make sure to check the garment care label to see if your clothes permit steaming.

Odour Eliminator Spray

Use an odour eliminating spray that is safe for fabrics, like febreeze, and spray it all around your clothes. You can also create your own odour eliminating spray by combining water, vinegar and plenty drops of an essential oil of your choice.

Baking Soda

Baking soda works well in removing odours. There are two ways you can use baking soda to remove the smoke smell from your clothes: soaking with baking soda only and soaking in a mixture of baking soda and water,

  • Soaking with baking soda only

Place your clothing item in a large plastic zip lock or resealable bag and add 1/2 a cup of baking soda before sealing the bag. Then, shake the bag so the baking soda is distribute the baking soda out evenly. Leave to sit for a few hours or overnight and wash as normal.

  • Soaking in baking soda and water

Fill up a sink or bucket with warm water, add a cup of baking soda and stir until the baking soda dissolves. Put your clothes into the mixture and it let it soak for up to 2 hours. Then wash as normal.

Vinegar

Fill up a sink or bucket with warm water and add a cup of distilled white vinegar. Soak clothing into the mixture for 1-2 hours before washing as normal.
