How To Care For Denim Jeans

Denim jeans are a staple in everyone’s closet. A common mistake we all make is not taking proper care of our jeans, but only because we don’t think much about it. This then results to jeans looking dull, faded and ruined after a short period of time.

There are certain steps you should take that will help make your denim jeans last longer.

How To Care For Denim Jeans

It’s important to note that you should always wash newly bought denim jeans before you use them, to prevent the dye from ‘bleeding’ and to remove other chemicals from the fabric.

  • Don’t wash them too often

Most of us, if not all, wash our jeans after only a few wears- not good! Truth is, you should be washing them after 5-6 wears or more. Over-washing your jeans will cause the material and colour to fade quicker. If your jeans do get a bit of dirt on them after only a few wears, try spot cleaning them instead of putting them into the wash

  • Wash them inside out and in cold water

Washing your jeans in cold water protects the colour against fading and prevents your jeans from shrinking. Always remember to turn your jeans inside out for extra colour protection. This way you’ll be able to have the inside of the garment properly cleaned whilst protecting the outer layer.

  • Air dry instead of tumble dry

Drying your jeans naturally is the best way to make your jeans last longer. Tumble drying can only cause damage to your jeans like wear and tear, and possible shrinkage. It’s best to air dry your clothes by hanging them up on a clothes lines away from the sunlight or with a hanger, indoors. Exposure to sunlight will cause the colour to fade.

Storing Denim Jeans

  • Folding your denim

Just fold them how you would usually fold your jeans but make sure to stack them nicely when you store them in wardrobe.

  • Hang up by the belt loop

Hanging your jeans up by the belt loop reduces unwanted creases and maintains the shape of your jeans. Either hang them on a hook or over a hanger.
