5 Things You Shouldn’t Clean With Vinegar

White vinegar, for the most part, is useful; it can be used on a lot of things and can be a great benefit to your laundry routine. It does live up to its effective cleaning reputation but for other things, it can cause more damage than good. To save yourself from trouble and cleaning headaches, here is our list of 5 things you shouldn’t clean with vinegar.

1. Washing Machine

From time to time, your washing machine does need cleaning and it’s a task we strongly recommend you undertake. However, the washing machine is on our list of things you shouldn’t clean with vinegar. The reason being is that the plastic and rubber parts of the washing machine can be corroded due to the vinegar. If this happens, the appliance will have leaking problems

2. Egg Stains

We all love eggs for our breakfast but hate the feeling of dropping them and making a mess. You should avoid using vinegar to clean up the mess as this will only make the egg stains thicker and harder to remove.

Fortunately, we have ‘cracked the code’ on properly removing egg stains in our blog here.

If you do encounter any egg stains, just get in touch with Laundryheap and we’ll remove them for you!

3. Mirrors

You should also avoid using vinegar to clean your mirror – be it in the bathroom or wardrobe mirror because it will only corrode the glass and ruin the reflection quality because dark spots will form.

Instead, use spray cleaning products to clean your mirrors.

4. Electronic Screens

Using vinegar on your electronic screens like TV, phones or MacBooks will cause scratches to form because vinegar damages the coating. Instead, use a cloth to wipe off any dust carefully.

5. Steam Irons

Vinegar may be useful when getting rid of the limescale inside your kettle but when it comes to steam irons, you should avoid using vinegar to clean them.

Irons have metal, plastic, and rubber inside them and unfortunately, these will be eroded if you add vinegar to your tank to clean them.

To properly take care of your irons, we recommend reading the cleaning instructions in the manual to be on the safe side.

Vinegar is popular among many households for its ability to cook and clean. It is versatile.

How Often Should You Change Your Pillows

Everyday life can be quite stressful with balancing work and chores. Getting a good night’s sleep with a good pillow is important for recharging. However, sometimes pillows show signs of wear and tear but how often should you change your pillows?

how often should you change your pillows

Generally, pillows last up to 1 or 2 years but this is also dependent on the pillow material. Pillows such as polyester, down or feather can last up to 1-2 years while polyfoam and latex pillows can last 3 years.

We strongly recommend you look out for any signs that your pillow needs replacing. You can check our blog about this here.

Changing your pillows is important because it maintains hygiene. Think about all the sweat, body oil, saliva and hair that has been absorbed by a pillow. Over time, these will build up bad odours and even attract bed bugs.

Furthermore, our dead skin cells are also absorbed by pillows and for dust mites, this is the hotspot to multiply. Sleeping on a pillow infested by dust mites can cause watery eyes, runny nose and overall, make sleep quality even worse.

Lastly, you deserve the best rest and sleep you can get. With a bad pillow, your sleep quality will suffer because putting your head on a flat pillow will cause neck pain.

Now that you know how often you should change your pillows, we hope you increase their lifespan by looking after them!

Visiting Dublin On A Budget

Whether you’re moving to Dublin or travelling with family, there is no doubt it’s a great city with its lively streets, Guinness and historic buildings. However, the city can be quite pricey but luckily, visiting Dublin on a budget is possible. Here are our tips to travel to Dublin without breaking the bank.

Visiting Dublin on a budget - ha'penny bridge

When Is The Best Time To Visit?

Visiting Dublin on a budget requires careful planning and preparation. This means that you need to look at the best time to visit Dublin. Typically, November, December and January are seen as the cheapest times to visit.

Furthermore, we also recommend booking on a Tuesday as that is the cheapest day to book.

Accommodation

Ideally, you should book your accommodation weeks or even months in advance to get the best deals.

Booking Airbnbs are also a good way to stay on a budget and at times, they are cheaper than a hotel room.

If you are staying in an Airbnb and you found that your laundry is piling up, just get in touch with us and we’ll pick up your laundry and return it back to you within 24 hours!

Using Transport

If you are keen to experience transport in Dublin, it’s important to remember that buses only accept cash and although they don’t give change, they are still cheap to use. The buses are a great option to use when travelling to the city centre from the airport.

We do advise you to get a Dublin pass that allows you to see 30 destinations and also gives you the chance to go on the hop-on, hop-off bus.

You also have the option of using LUAS, a tram system, that operates on two lines.

The good news is that when you’re in the city centre, you can get to the main places just by walking so using the transport system isn’t essential.

Explore The Cheap Attractions

It may sound hard to believe but there are free attractions to visit in Dublin. One of these is the national gallery. If you’re into art, we highly recommend this place which includes the works of Rembrandt, Money and Goya.

Attractions like Dublin Castle and St. Patricks don’t cost much just to look at them from the outside and take those amazing instagrammable photos!

Also, you should visit the national museum of Ireland if you’re interested in learning more about the culture and history.

Stay On A Budget When Visiting Pubs

It’s tempting, we know. Going to Dublin for the drinking culture is a must for many but it is also expensive. While you should visit the famous Temple Bar for the experience, we also recommend visiting other local pubs that are cheaper. Some pubs and bars price their pints for less than 4 EUR which is affordable!

Dublin is a trip that will give you many memories. Visiting Dublin on a budget is important but having fun and enjoying the trip with friends and family is also important!

A friendly reminder that we do offer laundry services in Dublin! If you need a hand in your laundry, just book a service with us!

What Happens If My Clothes Shrink?

Laundry mistakes are inevitable – you can’t stop them. We love our clothes and want to take care of them but unfortunately, clothes shrinking is common. While this can be quite the heartache, you can still save your clothes even after they’ve shrunk. In this blog, we’ll provide the answer to the question ‘what happens if my clothes shrink?’.

What Happens if my clothes shrink

Firstly, it’s important we dive a little deeper into why clothes shrink. The most common reason is that the dryer’s temperature was too hot, and some clothes and fabrics shrink when exposed to high heat. We always recommend you read the labels to make sure your garment is suited for tumble drying.

Cotton, wool, and linen are usually materials that are prone to shrinking.

Now to the main question. If you do come across the ‘oh dear my clothes have shrunk’ moment, here is what to do.

Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add baby shampoo. Stir it well until you see bubbles. You can also use a conditioner that will help stretch the fibres of your garment.

After you’ve done that, put the shrunk garment in lukewarm water and leave it there between 30 minutes and one hour.

Once time has passed, remove the garment but make sure you’ve let the water drip back into the sink.

Then, get a large absorbent towel and roll up the garment inside to squeeze out the remaining water. If the garment is getting damp, then it means you are doing it right.

Finally, stretch your clothing out so it starts to reshape and then air dry it but monitor it carefully.

Clothes shrinking is a common laundry mistake but as our guide has shown, clothes can be recovered. However, we do recommend always reading care labels to prevent clothes from shrinking.

A reminder that our laundry services are available to you if you found yourself too busy to do laundry! No hassle and no clothes shrinking!

Clothes That Don’t Need Dry-Cleaning

Dry cleaning brings more life to our clothes. While some clothes will remain in great shape after they’ve been dry-cleaned, others don’t have the same luck due to the chemical solvent used during the dry-cleaning process. In this blog, we’ll list the clothes that don’t need dry cleaning.

1. Wool

While it is true that wool can be dry-cleaned, you should still be cautious and not dry-clean it after every use as you are risking ruining the fabric. As a rule of thumb, always wash it manually with cold water and soap because wool falls on the list of clothes that don’t need dry cleaning.

2. Cotton T-Shirts

It’s inevitable that cotton t-shirts will get dirt and stains on them, but the good news is that they don’t require dry cleaning. Instead, a good old-fashioned way of putting them in the washing machine and dryer will keep them as good as new.

3. Cashmere

Cashmere is a high-quality fabric and unfortunately, it can lose its shape and shrink if dry-cleaned. To take care of your cashmere, it’s recommended you hand wash it with lukewarm water plus added laundry detergent.

4. Synthetics

Most of your daily clothes are made from fabrics such as nylon, spandex and polyester. These also are clothes that don’t need dry-cleaning and are totally safe to be put in the washing machine.

5. PVC, Polyurethane and plastic

In addition, PVC, polyurethane, and plastic clothing don’t need to be dry-cleaned because they’ll get ruined during the process.

Whenever laundering or dry-cleaning your clothes, it’s best to read the care labels on clothes to be certain. Dry cleaning is a gift that can do a brilliant job when used on the right fabrics.

Removing Common Halloween Stains

Halloween day is here! The spooky decorations are up, and the delicious cookies are baked. While it is an exciting day for the family and especially the kids, there are still some scary stains that lurk on costumes and clothes. To avoid a laundry nightmare, here is our guide to removing common Halloween stains.

1. Chocolate

Who doesn’t love chocolate? It’s delicious but as far as Halloween stains go, they can be devilishly stubborn to remove. It’s important you have the patience of an angel and treat the chocolate stains with care and caution.

The first step in removing chocolate stains is to immediately treat them with a butter knife and rinse your garment with cold water so it doesn’t spread across the fabric.

Lastly, pour liquid detergent into the chocolate stain and after 5 minutes, soak the garment for 15 minutes in cold water and start to rub the stained area.

2. Pumpkin

It wouldn’t be Halloween without Pumpkins but unfortunately, pumpkins are common Halloween stains. Although they look frightening, the good news is that they are easy to remove.

To remove them, inspect your garment closely and remove any pumpkin bits. After you’ve done that, wash them under cold water. Then pre-treat the stain with a laundry detergent and let it sit for 5 minutes. Finally, begin your laundry cycle.

3. Fake Blood

Fake blood looks scary on the kids’ faces as it does when it drops on their costumes, clothes or even on the sofa! Because it’s made of syrup and dye, it can be a stubborn stain to tackle on Halloween.

Your best bet when removing fake blood stains is to apply white vinegar and put it in water overnight before returning to it the next day to wash it with detergent.

4. Drink Stains

If you’re hosting a Halloween party, one of the most common drinks is fruit punches (for the kids). You shouldn’t worry if your kids do make a mess and spill this drink on their clothes because the stains are easy to remove. All you need do is rinse the stained area with cold water and then wash it at 40 degrees.

Removing these common Halloween stains will be inevitable but don’t let them stop you from having a grand time with your family! Happy trick-or-treating!

Does Baking Soda Fade Colours?

Baking soda is popular due to its ability to tackle tougher stains regardless if it’s a sofa or a garment. With its many benefits to your laundry routine, it’s no surprise that it is a great alternative to fabric softener. But does baking soda fade colours?

Does baking soda fade colours

While baking soda can undeniably be a benefit to your laundry due to its natural antiseptic properties, you should still use it with caution due to its high pH level that can fade colours on clothes.

Delicate fabrics such as wool, cashmere and silk are sensitive to the pH level so using too much baking soda can cause colours to fade and in turn, makes removing stubborn stains like coffee more difficult.

In addition, over-using baking soda can cause fabrics like wool and fabrics to go coarse. To keep it safe, use white vinegar to prevent colours from fading and fabrics from getting coarse.

We recommend using baking soda to a minimum when it comes to treating stains on fabrics. Next time your delicate fabrics are stained, mix baking soda with water to treat the stains.

Baking soda is a great product and is generally safe to use in the laundry. When used in moderation and with care, it will not cause colours to fade but always be cautious when using it on delicate fabrics.

If you don’t have any baking soda or fabric softeners to get rid of any stains, just get in touch with Laundryheap and we’ll tackle those stubborn stains for you!

How To Prepare For Halloween

Spooky season is well and truly upon us! Whether you’re trick or treating or scaring yourself with a horror movie, Halloween is an exciting time. For parents, it can be overwhelming with all the planning. Just the thought of shopping for costumes, baking Halloween cookies and decorating the house can be haunting to hear! To lift your spirits, we’re here to help you out! Here is how to prepare for Halloween!

prepare for halloween by carving out pumpkins

1. Get The Kids Involved

Kids love sweets and chocolates on Halloween (and we don’t blame them!) but if you want to prepare for Halloween, you should get the kids involved in decorating the house. Kids are creative and no doubt will have fun coming up with ideas to create a scary atmosphere at your house.

In addition, you should use Halloween as a time to introduce your kids to baking. If your Halloween plans include staying in and watching a scary horror with the family, then why not enjoy the night with homemade Halloween cookies? It’s sure to be a scream!

Don’t forget the pumpkins! It wouldn’t be Halloween without them. Ask your kids to carve the Pumpkins so they can truly show their artistic side and add an extra spooky vibe to your house!

2. Shop Early For Halloween Costumes

Preparing for Halloween costumes requires time and patience but if you leave your Halloween shopping to the last day, you’ll be rushing and miss out on the best deals.

Ask your kids what costumes they like to wear and buy them as soon as they’ve made their decision.

We do recommend the idea of renting costumes as it can save you more money rather than buying them.

3. Prepare For Halloween Trick Or Treating

Even if you don’t plan on going out and prefer a nice cosy night inside, you’ll still get the chance to interact with the trick-or-treaters! You don’t want to scare the trick-or-treaters away by telling them you have no treats. Make sure you at least have a bucket of sweets that you can hand out to them!

Halloween is a time that the whole community gets involved so make an impression on the neighbourhood by stacking up pumpkins, spider webs and other scary Halloween decorations!

4 Common High School Stains

As the first high school term finishes, kids are relieved to get a break. For busy parents, the thought of more laundry lingers. Laundry during the school year is difficult, but parents have learned the lesson to prepare. As you’re putting the school uniforms in the washer, you’ll encounter stains. This blog will go through the 4 common high school stains.

1. Ink

Perhaps not surprisingly, ink is at the top of the most common high school stains. Your child will be using ballpoint pens every day, so the writing is on the wall – ink stains are inevitable but worry not, they aren’t difficult to remove.

Ballpoint ink stains don’t take much to remove. If the ink is dry, rub alcohol on it, soak it for 15 minutes and then blot the stain. Afterwards, rinse the uniform in cold water and apply stain remover on it. Once you’re happy with the results, put the uniform in the washing machine and press the hot settings to start the cycle.

2. Paint

Painting is a fun activity for kids and great for the mindset as it encourages creativity. However, parents don’t have much fun removing paint stains from clothes because unfortunately, paint is one of the most common high school stains.

Water-based paint is regularly used in schools. The good news for parents is that it’s easy to remove.

To begin with, get a butter knife and scrape off as much as you can and then use warm water to rinse it. After you’ve done this, get a laundry detergent and mix half of it in warm water then blot it with a paper towel. If you’re happy with the results and the stain is going away, wash the uniform in the washing machine.

3. Mud

As much as we warn the kids about how dirty the mud is, they’ll still go and play sports in the muddy areas. We’re talking about football, cricket and even rugby!

Fortunately, mud stains are very visible, unlike ink stains, so chances are, you’ll spot them as soon as your child returns from school (bringing the mud with them!). When you see mud stains on their uniform, simply put the school uniform in the washing machine at 40 degrees. Mud stains usually will go away in the cycle.

For those sticky mud stains that have gone unnoticed for a period, brush them away first, pour liquid detergent on them and rinse them on cold water. Then put them in the washing machine at normal settings.

4. Glue

Whether it’s used on a project or in textbooks, glue always somehow lands on school uniforms. Everyone dreads seeing sticky glue on their uniform – it’s hard to avoid but it is easy to remove.

Simply get a butter knife and scrape the glue off the school uniform. Afterwards, put the uniform in the washing machine and wash at 40 degrees.

The main lesson to take here is that you’ll come across these common high school stains every term.

At Laundryheap, we aim to do just that. We offer laundry services for busy parents like you, so you don’t have to do the laundry. Let us take care of it and get rid of these stubborn high school stains!
